HOW TO CLOSE AN INTERVIEW………
Impressions are everything in an interview, so it is not only the initial 30 seconds that create an impression but also the way you choose to close the interview.
Effectively closing an interview can be key to leaving a positive impression and is a fantastic way of making yourself stand out.
1. Ask relevant questions
It is common practice at the end of an interview to be asked if you have any questions. This is a great way to gain further information to determine whether this is the right company and job for you. Therefore, having some pre-prepared questions shows that you are keen to find out more but also supports you in making an informed decision.
Example closing questions –
- Can you tell me about the team I would be working with?
- What are the companies’ future aspirations?
- What do you enjoy about working here?
- Can you tell me about the induction and training offered?
- What career progression do you offer?
- What are the expectations of the role over the next 3 months?
- What are the next steps in the hiring process?
2. Offer any additional information or documents
Ask the interviewer if they would be interested in seeing any certificates or evidence of achievements in your last role. Although most companies will apply for their own references, if you have references to hand offer to show them.
3. Express enthusiasm and reinstate interest
Using positive and confident language, reinstate your interest in the position and company. Show your commitment by summarizing your key qualities and how they align to the job requirements.
4. Next steps
Enquire as to the next steps in the hiring process, including timelines and the format of any of the following interview stages. This allows you to gain a clearer understanding of the decision-making process but also holds the interviewer accountable to provide feedback in a timely manner.
5. Thank the interviewer
Thank the interviewer for their time and for sharing insights into the role. This will leave a positive and professional impression.
6. Follow up
Send a follow up message within 24 hours of your interview thanking them for their time and consideration. Attach any additional information and/or documentation to support your application. This will reiterate your interest and keep you in the interviewer’s mind.
Summary
Leaving a good impression at an interview is crucial because it greatly influences the employer’s decision. These impressions shape how you're perceived — your professionalism, confidence, communication skills, and cultural fit. A strong close can make a positive impact and reinforce your suitability for the role.
